Promises of Freedom

This exhibition presents works from the Arthur Primas Collection, a significant collection of African American Art that includes paintings, sculptures, works on paper, graphics and documents. Included in the exhibition are 75 works by more than 30 artists. These artists, many under the extreme pressure of an unresponsive public, brought forth magnificent art which reflects the African American experience and aesthetic.

* Organized by/exhibition tour management by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles, CA in association with Heritage Gallery.

Charles White: Love Letter III
Artist Charles White
'Love Letter III', 1977

The Heritage Gallery was opened in 1961 by Benjamin Horowitz and Charlotte Sherman. It is perhaps the oldest continuously operating gallery in Los Angeles, and has consistently exhibited the finest quality art. The Heritage Gallery has assisted many museums and notable art collectors in building their collections. Charlotte Sherman is a frequent museum curator and has organized important museum exhibitions. She has been a certified appraiser since 1975.

Mr. Horowitz was instrumental in organizing the Art Dealers Association of California, which formulated the code of ethics for the art dealers. Charlotte Sherman is a Board Member of the Art Dealers Association, and is currently Secretary/Treasurer of the Association.

The Heritage Gallery represents African American artists such as Charles White, Margaret Burroughs, James McMillan, Ernie Barnes, and William Pajaud; Social Realist artists such as William Gropper; Latin American, Hispanic, and Mexican American artists such as Carlos Almaraz and David Alfaro Siqueiros; Californian artists such as Michael Shankman, and additional Modern and Contemporary artists from around the world, to name just a few.

Appraisals and consultation services are available - contact Charlotte Sherman, Heritage Gallery Director at chashe@att.net.
